Reflective Tape

Retroreflective tape returns light straight back toward its source. That is why a strip of it on a truck, a gate or a hydrant reads clearly from a driver’s seat at night when everything around it does not. Identi-Tape carries three grades, and the practical difference between them is how much light comes back.

3M Scotchlite 5100 engineer grade is the general-purpose choice for vehicles, equipment, tools and signage — eight colors, ASTM D4956, with several in NFPA-compliant shades for fire apparatus.

3M 983 Diamond Grade is microprismatic and non-conformable: the brightest of the three, for markings that have to read at distance on a flat surface.

Oralite V92 high-intensity is roughly seven times brighter than engineer grade, weatherproof and NFPA compliant — the usual specification for emergency vehicles, fire hydrants and school buses.

Which grade you need comes down to viewing distance, mounting surface, and whether you are meeting a written standard. Conformable grades wrap corrugated and riveted surfaces; non-conformable grades want flat.
